It is often necessary, even desirable for political leaders to withhold information from the public.

The American Government didn't tell the truth in Transformers, the famous movie directed by Michael Bay last summer. The governmental officers were not sure what will happen if they inform the citizens there are some big robots, who can talk, read and even think themselves in the earth. If what the movie describes is true, should we be told the information?

Mass media often want to discover some things which most people don't know. The best explanation is that the public have the right to know. Even if we all know they hope it can simulate to sell out their newspapers, books, or magazines. But, when a person faces something which he does not understand clearly and imagine, it is inevitable that he will be frightened. Human beings are such an animal who is not immune to undiscovered things. It will make people not think normally. And if all the people in a city, a society, or a country have such action, it must be a catastrophe.

However, this is always the reason governments use to tell their people if they don't want the citizen know what they had ever done. If we accept the brief reason they provide, we won't know if there is anyone who is mercenary and irresponsible. Look at what have happened in Tibet. If we just believe what Chinese government said and don't see the images the western reporters took, we won't know how grief the Tibetans suffered.

Under some conditions, the political leaders really have reasons to withhold information from the public. But once we accept this view totally and didn't argue for the right to know the darkness, it is undoubtedly a leader will be overpowered. We won't know what he/she should not do. And even the result is what we cannot imagine.
